SUGIWORKS

Sugiworks is dedicated to presenting the works by the Los Angeles based multidisciplinary artist Jeffrey Sugishita (b. 1998, Los Angeles, California). Sugishita's creative practice revolves around the exploration of the material world and connecting with the land he inhabits. Sugishita's experiences of traversing both the wild and domestic landscapes becomes filtered through his cognition and manifests in the form of a barrage of mixed media artworks, which includes drawings, sculptures, collages, wearable art, photography, and video art. Sugishita's practice is an investigation of his existence in this material universe, and a survey of how humanity resides amongst others on this planet Earth.

Sugishita graduated from the FineArts program (BFA) at ArtCenter College of Design, Pasadena, California, in the fall of 2023 as Valedictorian with Distinction.

ZEN//SHIN

April 5 - May 2, 2025

Jeffrey Sugishita’s debuting solo exhibition, ZEN//SHIN, will be presented at Neo LA Gallery. The exhibition reflects Sugishita's experience of facing the full force of nature during the recent wildfires that spread across Los Angeles. Having lost his home and studio in Altadena to the Eaton Fires, Sugishita presents a selection of mixed media works that either survived the fires or was created anew from what was lost.

Recent Loss from the Eaton Canyon Fire

I suffered from the recent devastating Eaton Canyon Wildfire. On 1/08/2025, the wildfire consumed my house and along with it my studio space, machinery, tools, materials, and an estimate of 300〜400 artworks that I've made up till now. What managed to survive are 20 or so works and a bag of tools- I could say a mere 5% of what I've accumulated at the house over the years.

With my work space and living space I put so much effort into building the past four years reduced to a pile of rubble and dust, I was left speechless with the reality I was facing.

However, I wasn't letting everything go down in ashes for nothing. 30 minutes after discovering my house entirely gone, with what was once my room still ablaze in the heat, I switched my mentality and started documenting my burning house with the few works that survived. Because that’s what I do. I create. Every thing can be taken from me but the creativity that resides at the core of my existence will never perish for long as I remain alive. I will continue forward while cherishing what I have left within me- the utter joy of living in this material world and getting to experience it with the entirety of my existence.
